Who knows what compels a kid to run for a student council position at the ripe age of 12. But, for Angela, that decision in the spring of 1986 at Fremont Junior High in Roseburg, Oregon, has made all the difference. It set in motion thirty years of opportunities, lessons, and friendships, the impact of which have resonated into all realms of her life, personal and professional.
Angela is keenly aware that it was committed teachers, coaches, and mentors who empowered her to believe she could and would be a leader, so it’s no surprise that for nearly twenty years at McMinnville High, Angela has welcomed roles that put her in a position to return the favor. From the language arts classroom, to the theatre and the speech team, to student government and most recently yoga, she’s been dedicated to equipping students with the tools and experiences once gifted to her. The ones that ignite and fuel leadership for a lifetime. Again and again she has been humbled by the wisdom and power of young people - just take a look at the biographies of Stephanie, Ben, and Rhett and you’ll know exactly what she means.
Away from school, Angela and her husband, Jeff, keep up with her teenage son, Zane. Running, hiking, rafting, and rock climbing are favorite pastimes, but just as often settling in to read, write, and photograph, or work on home restoration projects beckons them. A long time vocalist and performer, Angela has recently picked up the guitar and begun lessons. Watch out, coffee shop open mic nights! She also "moonlights" as a yoga instructor at 4Elements Yoga Studio, plans community running events for local service organizations, and has taken up coloring with her grown up friends.
Angela is a proud Oregon State University graduate where she studied speech communication and theatre. She broke into the education scene at Willamette University and plans to return to university next year to pursue her doctorate in educational leadership. In addition to her classroom assignment at McMinnville High, Angela has served as a new teacher mentor, instructional coach, and professional development facilitator and instructor for her district.
And, as for how she came to be a part of this team, the story begins way back in 1986 at Fremont Junior High, where Angela was fortunate to hear Jon Bullock speak...
